A.1 Kinematics
How do we describe motion, and predict where an object will be? Start with the big idea, practise with the drill, then tick off the self-check.
The big idea in one minute
Velocity is how fast position changes. Acceleration is how fast velocity changes.
Graphs connect them: the gradient of a position–time graph is the velocity, the gradient of a velocity–time graph is the acceleration, and the area under a velocity–time graph is the displacement. When the acceleration is constant, four equations do the same job:
v = u + at · s = ½(u + v)t · s = ut + ½at² · v² = u² + 2as
Distance is the length of the path. Displacement is the change in position, with a direction. They differ when an object turns back.
Without air resistance every object accelerates downwards at g = 9.8 m s⁻², going up, at the top and coming down.
Two motions at once: constant velocity across, free fall up and down. The time links them.
