A.2 Forces and momentum

Why does motion change? A.2 has three parts: forces, circular motion and linear momentum. All three parts are ready: notes, visual guides, levelled practice and IB-format practice for each.

The big idea in one minute

ΣF = ma  ·  ΣF = Δp/Δt

A force is an interaction between two bodies. Draw every force on one body, add them up, and Newton’s laws tell you how the motion changes: no net force, no change in velocity; a net force, an acceleration in the same direction.

Concept builders

Begin every part of this topic with its concept builder: predict, test with the simulation, explain. Then read the notes, practise, and finish with the papers.

Concept builder: predict, test, explain

Three guided lessons with simulations: predict, test, explain. Done in class.

Skill drill

New numbers every time, on forces: friction, buoyancy, lifts and pulleys. The page marks your answer and shows the steps. Use g = 9.8 m s⁻² and give answers to 3 significant figures.

🔒 The circular motion and momentum questions are part of the full course.

Full course resources are available to enrolled students through an access code.

The drill above uses forces questions only. With an access code it also gives ω and v, centripetal force, bends, vertical circles, impulse, collisions, recoil and explosions.

For all of A.2: quizzes

Three quizzes: forces, circular motion, momentum

3 quizzes of 10 questions, 30 minutes each, one attempt. Your teacher gives you the answers later.

Extra help

Not a step: use these when you are stuck, or to revise.

Visual guide

11 figures you can move. Use them when an idea does not make sense.

Circular motion visual guide

7 figures you can move. Use them when an idea does not make sense.

Linear momentum visual guide

8 figures you can move. Use them when an idea does not make sense.

Flashcards

62 cards for quick recall of definitions and equations. Good before a quiz.
